Botox is a medicine produced by bacteria. Botox is not alive but is a protein that weakens and inactivates muscles. The use of bacteria for medicinal purposes is not novel. Fungi produce penicillin and the cowpox virus protects against smallpox. Medication for heart disease such as digitalis is made from the poison of the foxglove plant. In bioengineering, it is common for bacteria to produce the necessary medicine for a specific disease.

Botox, in relatively small doses, is injected directly into a specific muscle and only that specific muscle is temporarily blocked. No anesthesia is required, although the doctor may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to injecting. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. You may resume normal activity immediately but we recommend that the patient not lie down for five hours following treatment, avoid exercise or heavy lifting for 24 hours. The Botox takes effect in three to four days. Over 3 to 4 months, the Botox ‘s effect will fade and the muscle action will return. When the lines start to reappear, a simple repeat treatment is all that is needed to maintain the desired result. Furthermore, with repeated injections, the muscle may become permanently blocked and no additional injections are required.

Botox is also a very effective treatment for excessive sweating of the palms of the hands and underarm areas. When injected very superficially, only the sweat glands are affected without causing muscle weakness. It is extremely effective and will last up to 1 year in these anatomical sites.
